Droppings from the Nest, September 2nd

The first night back in Boise didn’t turn out as the Hawks had hoped, losing to Spokane 5-1.  The Hawks were only able to record four hits, and scored their run at the very end of the 9th inning.

As Greg Rohan said in his post-game interview, “That roadtrip was hard on us…that long sleeping in hotels and out of a suitcase, it wears on you.  We’re definitely glad to be back.”  So maybe it just took last night to get them back on their feet.

Once again, the Hawks just couldn’t pull it together to scoot by Spokane; three Boise errors allowed for three unearned runs for the Indians and a 4-2 outcome.  And while Logan Watkins saw his hitting streak end with 17 games, several other Hawks kept their bats alive.  Bobby Wagner extended his to 13 games, Hak-Ju Lee to 10 and Greg Rohan to nine games.  The Hawks are now just one loss away from the disappearance of post-season hopes.

Valdez.jpgOn to the droppings:

After Valdez was named to the post-season all-star team he was promoted to the Peoria Chiefs (Low-A).  Valdez hit .302 with 17 stolen bases in Boise.  Known for his speed, Valdez is tied at second in the NWL with stolen bases, only second to teammate Hak-Ju Lee (22).

Hernandez2.jpgEven with a pitchers duel between Hawks Robert Hernandez and Spokane’s Braden Tullis, the Hawks pulled out the win 1-0 thanks to an RBI single by Logan Watkins.

And on an interesting note, all three pitchers for the Hawks last night (Hernandez, Eduardo Figueroa and Dionis Nunez) happen to live with the same host family.  I’m sure they went home and had a big celebration.

But now the guys hit the road for a week and a half, making visits to Yakima, Spokane and Tri City.  It will be a nice break for us in the front office, and I have some pretty exciting plans in the works.  Tonight I head to the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Saturday I’m planning on floating the Boise river for the second time this summer and then going salsa dancing.  I’m also hoping to fit in another camping trip while the guys are gone.  Oh, and lots and lots of sleep!

But before I get carried away thinking about my upcoming plans, let’s get to those droppings:

HAM Cribs with Greg Rohan

Opening Night-6-20-09 545.jpgThe American public in general has a fascination with celebrities, whether they be actors or professional athletes.  Look at the rise of reality tv and shows like MTV’s Cribs.  So in an effort to keep up the trend, HAM decided to do our own little bit of celebreality.

Enter, HAM Cribs with Hawks third baseman Greg Rohan.  Greg takes brings us in and shows us the perks of being a minor league baseball player, host family and all.

I’m not going to lie…he’s got it made…why else would we have chosen him for our Cribs episode?

Droppings from the Nest, July 18th

Brett celebration.jpgThree in a row–the guys notched their third win, sweeping Yakima–the first time there has been three wins in a row or a sweep for the Hawks all season!  Greg Rohan also hit a homer last night, making it two in a row for the Hawks on the long-awaited long ball.  I really think this team is picking up momentum and is coming into their own.  And I think it has a lot to do with attitude–the guys are having fun together, on the field and off,  and when you are having fun you perform much much better.

I joked in my post yesterday about the player of the game getting a shaving cream pie for the past two games (and poor Greg Rohan got one last night as well), but it really shows the camaraderie of the team.  Another example is the group of about five guys who came out and lay on the grass to watch the fireworks after the game.  They are having fun with each other–and only good things can come of that.

Now to the droppings:

Don’t forget to check out the post-game party at Applebee’s tonight after the game.  Players will be there to mingle with fans!  Check it out–Applebee’s at the corner of Glenwood and Chinden.  I’ll see you there!
