Imagine this: You’re driving down the road, minding your own business when you see the reflection blue lights flashing in your rear-view mirror…yep a copper.
“Why do you have a giant potato in your front seat?”
“You see, sir, I work for the Hawks. And I had to drive Spud from the mascot race back to the stadium.”
“Do you realize you cannot see out of the right side of your car?”
“Um, yes sir…but…Spud doesn’t fit in my trunk or my backseat…the front seat was my only option…I mean, sir, what do you suggest? Would you like to escort Spud in your backseat?”
That is exactly the scenario playing through my head as I cruised past (as unassumingly as I possibly could) a Boise police officer Friday afternoon…with a giant potato riding shotgun.
Oh the adventures of community appearances.
Last Friday was the Main Street Mile’s “A Mile for Men’s Health.” Main Street Mile is a non-profit whose mission is to eradicate prostate cancer as a life threatening disease by advancing awareness, education and screenings. As part of the event, Humphrey and Spud ran in the Mascot Scamper (hence the reason for a giant potato in my car).
While neither Humphrey nor Spud made it into the top three, they did put in a great effort. And both did an awesome job pumping up all of the kids for their race, the Meadow Gold’s Children’s Half Miler.
But supporting Spud in Humphrey in their race wasn’t the only reason my boss, Kristen Nimmo and I were there–the Boise Hawks have partnered with the Main Street Mile and will be “batting for men’s health.”
The Hawks will be contributing funds to the Main Street Mile through our “Jersey Off Their Backs” program by wearing replica 1978 Chicago Cubs jerseys various times throughout June and July. The jerseys will be auctioned off on BoiseHawks.com through July 31, with bidding coming to a close at 8 p.m. MST. All proceeds will benefit prostate cancer research and awareness.
Don’t forget to bid on your favorite Boise Hawks player’s jersey before it’s too late!
Droppings from the Nest, June 30th
NOTE: Tonight’s game against Yakima will start at 6:30 p.m.
Hawks won their second-straight in victory against Yakima last night! Greg Rohan hit a walk-off RBI single to win the game, 3-2, in the 10th. It was so great to see all of the players rush the field and swarm around Manager Casey Kopitzke, who is 2-0 since re-joining the team.
So because of that awesome news, there are bound to be some good droppings today!

- Of course the Idaho Statesman had a story about last night’s extra-inning rally, but Chris Langrill also addresses the Hawks’ slow start and how that doesn’t determine success one way or the other.
- The Idaho Press-Tribune’s Trent Lootens covers the Hawks’ second-straight win plus “An Inning With…” pitcher Miguel Sierra.
- Check out Channel 2’s footage of last night’s win over Yakima.
- Channel 7 wraps up last night’s thriller.
- Hawks pitcher Danny Keefe (right) gets a mention at tampabay.com as he is one of three University of Tampa players to sign with MLB teams.
Who Said Sundays Were Boring at the Ballpark?
When I first arrived in Boise, I was warned that Sundays are painfully slow for us as far as crowd size, crowd involvement, etc. But with two Sundays already under my belt, I must say that they have been my absolute favorite days of the first two homestands. True, we don’t have an overwhelming crowd on Sundays, but it seems like we make them fun anyway.
Last week it was freezing cold, and we happened to keep the crowd alive with some awesome dancing skills by our ushers; I even received a comment in-game on Twitter that said “@BoiseHawksOC You guys got it going this year, its light rain and you have us pumped up having fun, if anyone hasn’t come they need to get here”.
But this Sunday took the cake! As part of our Seven Deadly Sundays promotions where each Sunday is based on one of the seven deadly sins, we raffled off two members of the front office staff for dates as part of lust night. Our major focus was on the charity the proceeds from the raffle were going to–Hawks Nation Charity; all money from Hawks Nation goes back into supporting youth sports in the Treasure Valley.
The raffle was a huge success with the contestants going head-to-head in a dizzy bat race, potato race and the dance-off. The catch was that each person had to promote themselves and go around the stadium to try to sell as many tickets as possible–and to raise as much money for the charity as possible.
Check out our two contestants and their pitches on why Hawks’ fans should by a raffle ticket and support the Hawks Nation Charity.
Nicole’s pitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN_js-okAxw
Bryan’s pitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh5psP8qbas
Really throughout the night it was neck and neck between the two contestants, but there was definitely a turning point when one of them pulled ahead of the other–the dance-off.
Check out this footage and find out who the winner was, not only of the dance-off, but of the friendly office competition to sell more tickets.

This Sunday was definitely one to remember…and I forgot the best part of the night… HAWKS WIN!!
I can’t wait to see what next Sunday brings!

Droppings from the Nest, June 26th
Hawks win! Hawks win! Hawks win!
The Hawks came back with a rally in the final two innings to push past Salem-Keizer, 5-4.
Greg Rohan recorded the Hawks first homer of the season; Hak-Ju Lee extended his hitting streak to six games; and Logan Watkins, who has hit safely in five of his six games, had a season-high three RBI.
So much for the Black Widow curse…maybe I just had to get it out in the open in order for the baseball gods to relieve me of my burden.
Let’s hope so.
- Of course, the big news today is the Hawks’ first win of the season, and the Idaho Statesman has a game recap of last night’s victory.
- Channel 2 also highlights the Hawks’ win, but also does a video feature on Manager Casey Koptitzke’s arrival to the Treasure Valley.
- Channel 7 also covers Kopitzke’s return to the team.
If I’m missing any droppings in my daily sweep, let me know–I don’t want to leave anyone out (onalee@boisehawks.com).
Hawks Tangled in the Black Widows Web
I am the Black Widow.
Now for some background: In college, a friend of mine deemed me the Black Widow after several of the Memphis Redbirds players I had interviewed curiously started slumping. But not only were they not getting hits, their errors increased.
Female Black Widow spiders are known to be particularly dangerous, not only to people, but also to their male counterparts. But the nickname isn’t derived just from a biology book–there’s also a baseball tie.
The name comes from The Natural. You know the woman dressed in all black that ends up shooting Roy Hobbs? Well, my friend calls her the Black Widow because she basically ends Hobbs’ career.
While I definitely haven’t shot anybody, at times it seems that my curse could send them into such a downward spiral that they don’t recover.
Of course, I don’t do this intentionally. I want all of these guys to succeed; and if I chose to interview you in the first place it probably means that you were doing well. But now take a look at your stats…
I am the Black Widow.
All of that to say: I think a few of our Hawks might be tangled in my web. After all, we are 0-5 right now with a team ERA of 7.74 and 12 errors. Our hitting hasn’t suffered as much as I thought it had, but if you look at the individuals that are being affected by the Black Widow, the curse is quite apparent.
Of course, I cannot name names…superstition is a nasty thing in baseball.
I have to work with these guys for the rest of the season; and I can’t be on their bad side. Plus, I have articles to write which means interviews to do–if word gets out that I’m the Black Widow and you are doomed if I ask you for quotes, I’m in big trouble.
I’ve tried numerous times to apologize to the baseball gods and pray that my Black Widow curse is lifted–but it seems that I’ve carried it with me from Memphis.
To the individual players I have cursed, the team as a whole, the Cubs organization, Hawks fans and front office staff–I am sorry. I am the Black Widow.
But at least now there’s someone to blame for the losses, right?
Droppings from the Nest, June 24th-25th
I apologize; I have some catching up to do. Yesterday was my day off, and I would have never guessed I would sleep half the day away! By the time I thought about collecting the droppings it was late afternoon and I just decided to do a combo collection today.
Note: Whew! After this opening homestand, I think I value sleep more than I ever did in college!
- What would I do without Google Alerts?! Seriously, without it, I wouldn’t have come across this great blog entry at Riches of My Soul talking about the Hawks game. So touching! This reminds me why we do things like Economy Night here at the Hawks!

Droppings from the Nest, June 23rd
Well, we lost another one last night. Seems like our bullpen just can’t bring it together. We were fine through the 6th, then Tri-City tied it up in the 7th…and the rest is a painful deja vu of the previous two nights.
But now the boys are in Salem to take on the Volcanoes. New series.
New team. Fresh slate.
Here are some pictures Safford took on the bus
ride out to Salem. Be sure to check out his blog On the Mike with Mike Safford for game updates and commentary on life on the road.

Now…on to the droppings!!

Autographs and Wiffle Ball: Player Appearance with Pitcher Tarlandus Mitchell
Believe it or not, the morning of Opening Night we had six player appearances! SIX! Luckily, our guys are 1) extremely nice and 2) maybe a little naive because it was super easy to find six willing guys to head out to several subdivisions Saturday morning.
MetLife, Journal Broadcast and the Boise Hawks teamed up to bring Boise the HOME RUN, an event that urged the community to take advantage of the low property pricing and historic interest rates. The HOME RUN featured special home pricing, reduced-rate financing and of course, the best part, the Boise Hawks!! Six players participated in the event–Ryan Sontag, Sean Hoorelbeke, Logan Watkins, Josh Whitlock, Jon Nagel and Tarlandus Mitchell–along with members of the front office and Gang Green, our mobile marketing team. The players paired off with the front office and Gang Green staff so we could cover all of the bases, so to speak.
I was paired with Tarlandus Mitchell, a RHP out of Alto, TX. The Cubs drafted Mitchell in the 22nd round of the 2008 Draft. According to Mitchell, his best pitch is probably his curveball but his 96 mph fast ball is by far his favorite pitch to throw.
Mitchell was a big hit with both the parents and the kids. The adults grilled him on his fastball, what it was like to be drafted out of college and just the ins-and-outs of professional baseball.
All the kids were concerned with were autographs and some wiffle ball. In the picture to the right, Mitchell signs a young boy’s back, not his shirt, his back. Parents, simple paper autographs don’t count anymore, now kids practically want tattoos of their favorite athlete’s signature.
After grabbing some grub, the children of Brownstone put Mitchell’s skills to the
test when everyone got together for a friendly little game of wiffle
ball.
