Droppings from the Nest, August 13th
Last night’s Latino Night turned out to be one big fiesta with a Mariachi band, dancers, festive music and special PA announcing in Spanish. Definitely a great time and really seemed to liven up the crowd a bit. Additionally, I know our Latino players really appreciated the promotion and gave them a little taste of home–while Andres Quezada was signing autographs before the game he said, “I really like Latino night…especially the music!” I took this as a huge compliment to the night since Quezada is a pretty quiet guy and rarely offers his opinion on things.
On to the droppings:

Droppings from the Nest, August 11th
Well, the Hawks couldn’t complete the sweep last night and were shut out by the Yakima Bears 0-5. The guys return to Memorial probably with a twinge of Groundhog Day as they take on the Everett AquaSox–the same team they played just four days ago.

HAM Cribs with Greg Rohan
The American public in general has a fascination with celebrities, whether they be actors or professional athletes. Look at the rise of reality tv and shows like MTV’s Cribs. So in an effort to keep up the trend, HAM decided to do our own little bit of celebreality.
Enter, HAM Cribs with Hawks third baseman Greg Rohan. Greg takes brings us in and shows us the perks of being a minor league baseball player, host family and all.
I’m not going to lie…he’s got it made…why else would we have chosen him for our Cribs episode?

Droppings from the Nest, August 8th-10th
Hawks win! Hawks win! Hawks win! I leave the droppings alone for three days and what happens?! The Hawks win three in a row! After pulling out a win in their last game in Everett, the Hawks have started the Yakima series with two wins and are looking for their third–and the sweep–tonight.
Now let’s get to those droppings:
- The Idaho Statesman recaps Friday’s, Saturday’s and Sunday’s wins; additionally, the Statesman ran a Chicago Tribune article about former Hawk Jeff Samardzija.
- The Idaho Press-Tribune also the Hawks’ escape from a five-game sweep, and their Saturday and Sunday wins over Yakima.
Behind the Scenes with Oh! Show Productions
I recently sat down with Tony Okun and Eric Sandmeyer or Oh! Show Productions to chat a little bit about their work with the Hawks , their background and their soon-to-be-released documentary “Time in the Minors.”
Tony and Eric have collaborated on several Hawks projects, including a behind-the-scenes look at Media Day, a preseason commercial, theme song and Project Filter PSAs about quitting tobacco use. Find out exactly which Hawks project Tony and Eric enjoyed the most in this sound byte from my interview with the two collaborators.

Besides the Hawks work, as baseball fans, you might be interested to learn more about Tony and Eric’s documentary, “Time in the Minors.“
“I think your readers would be very interested in this film because there is an internal aspect of the players that doesn’t get presented on the field,” said Eric. “You get the action on the field, but his film gets inside their head; the pressures of hanging in there for one more season while they’re trying to get the attention of the scouts; the pressure of if they’re not hitting very well, what that does to your head and it makes it harder to get up to bat the next time. Or what happens when you feel like crud; it’s hard to get up and go out there and your schedule is just boom, boom, boom. And what they guys go through mentally is a really exciting story.”

Props to Ryan, yesterday, with his guest blog. I know it was helpful for me to have new material up on the blog when I had the day off. He even gathered up some droppings for me…which is usually quite the tedious task. So enough delay, let’s get to those droppings…

Guest Blog: Box Office Assistant Ryan Worthen
This is Ryan Worthen, Box Office Assistant for the Hawks, writing this blog. It is Onalee’s day off. You may be asking yourself this: Why is this guy, a ticket person, writing a guest blog on “A Bird’s Eye View”?
I graduated last April from BYU-Idaho with a degree in communication. My emphasis was public relations. One of the possible career paths that I hope to pursue in the future is to play a key role in helping a professional baseball team gain positive exposure through public relations. This is why I am writing a gues blog today, to gain a little experience in the professional world of doing PR for an organization.
As mentioned earlier, I am running the Boise Hawks Box Office this summer. I love my job. I love dealing with tickets and interacting with a wide assortment of people. When dealing with tickets one must be detail oriented. You are playing a key role in seating a couple thousand people in the right seat with the right people. This is my second summer involved with professional baseball. Last summer, I completed a successful general internship with the Idaho Falls Chukars. I was able to get my feet wet in all areas of what it takes to run a professional baseball team ranging from tickets and promotions to groundskeeping and sponsorship sales. I worked a lot with tickets last summer. I ran the Chukars box office and was the main ticket person.
I received my job with the Hawks at the Las Vegas Baseball Winter Meetings. It was a great experience at the meetings. I was able to interview with 10 teams. I am grateful that I chose to work this summer with the Hawks. This is a great organization with great employees. I have learned a lot about working in professional baseball from working with the Hawks and the Chukars. While the future of where my career path will go to is not clear, I have developed a special interest in either doing tickets or marketing/public relations for a professional baseball team.
Sorry for rambling on, but I must say this: Kristen and Onalee do an amazing job in publicizing this team. They are always out in the community, talking with the media, writing stories, and doing whatever it takes to promote the team in a positive way.
Thanks for reading this blog. This is the first time I had ever blogged in my life, as shown probably by the dryness of this post. I hope to start up my own blog soon to write about my passion for the great sport of baseball.
Time-traveling Hawks
If you attended the game on Saturday, August 1st you might have though you’d stumbled into a time machine and somehow ended up spending a hot summer day at the ballpark in 1939.
For the Albertsons 70th Birthday Bash, the Boise Hawks went all out with our 1939 promotion. The team wore special 1939 throw-back Albertsons jerseys for the night, the front office dressed in 1939 costumes courtesy of the Costume Shop on Chinden, we gave away 1939 jersey t-shirts, and our typical mix of pop and country music was ousted by swing and big band a la “The Natural.” Additionally, the bleacher seating was only 70 cents per ticket!!
Earlier that day, a couple of players–George Matheus, Eduardo Figueroa, Jon Nagel, Josh Whitlock and Hak-Ju Lee–made appearances at local Albertsons wearing their snazzy throw-backs. They surprised early Saturday morning shoppers with friendly faces and autographs. We came across several very excited kids; including one who shouted, “Mommy, I see the baseball players!” every time we passed.
But the party really didn’t start until the staff showed up in their 1939’s garb…we had a little bit of every 1939 life-style imaginable, sailors, army officers, gangsters, cool cats and movie stars…
